Growing up I have always known I want to be of service to others. I've valued spending time with older people my whole life. I have lived in a household with my grandparents, which has given me another level of appreciation of their wisdom. I truly enjoy hearing their stories and soaking up every bit of information I can from them. They have had bridge nights monthly since I was little, and I always looked forward to being able to serve and connect with their friends throughout the night.
I have had many other experiences that have helped shape me into the person I am today. I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Pine Ridge Indian reservation during two very different stages of my life. When I was nine, I was able to go with my grandmother and the purpose was really to understand their culture and living circumstances. While the poverty was evident, they had an overwhelming sense of genuine love and care for everyone around them, which is what I have carried with me since that trip. This past summer when I went, it really gave me motivation to help those around me. Throughout the week I was able to build, paint, and install a portapotty, insulate a trailer, and meet with the community. One thing that really stuck out to me the second trip was how much the Oglala Sioux cared for and respected their elders. Working with an older population would utilize my strengths relating to people and understanding the difficulties of older life transitions.
The past four years, I have been on a medical journey that has cultivated exponential empathy and compassion for others. I feel this has helped guide me toward a helping profession.
