I mainly focus on service work, some days can be easy, but most days pose new and difficult challenges which I really enjoy. I also perform inspections of systems including, Wet pipe, Dry pipe, Pre action, and Deluge pipe systems. We are responsible for maintaining and inspecting sprinkler systems to ensure they will work to their full capability in the event of a fire. Most service work is working in attics, replacing heads, or replacing pipe. There is a ton of different stuff we do though so we are constantly learning new things. We cut, thread, and groove pipe typically, very occasionally we will put a weld on a piece of pipe. We cover the whole state of Nebraska and a good chunk of Iowa. Depending on where the work is, we can wind up staying on the road for a pretty long period of time. Overall this has been the greatest career I've had, and I find that I get a lot of satisfaction from the work.
I worked in a warehouse building special projects based off of blueprints. It was mostly custom cabinets, mantles, and a lot of laminate and edging material. I also built custom tables, benches, and other various designs. Somebody would bid a job, then an architect would make the plans, and then raw wood would come to our shop, where a person would cut and finish all of it. From there the blueprints and the material would find its way to my desk. I would put all of the like pieces together, go through the print and try to find the most efficient way to put everything together. Typically I would start with making sure that everything is correct and clearing up any confusion with the architect. After that I would cut all of my wood to the proper sizes, and put everything together. The last step is sanding, which is by far the most tedious, after that I send it to the paint room and from there it would be sent to the job site. Very rewarding job and felt a lot of satisfaction.
